5 days to the Jokkmokk Winter Market
A small-group travel package with a visit to one of the oldest markets in Sweden, an encounter with our own reindeer and ice fishing in the snowy landscape.
From 3 to 7 February 2027, we are taking a small group to one of the best-known winter events in northern Sweden: the Jokkmokk Winter Market.
On this package you visit the Jokkmokk market, go ice fishing in the snowy landscape and get to know our own reindeer personally. Jon-Anders tells you, from his own life as a Sámi reindeer herder, about reindeer herding, his culture and the history connected to it.
What you'll do on this trip
Meet our own reindeer
Anna and Jon-Anders take you to their own reindeer. Jon-Anders is a Sámi reindeer herder himself and tells you from his own experience about life with the reindeer and Sámi culture. This is not a visit to a commercial “reindeer farm”: the reindeer you meet belong to our own herd.
Ice fishing
Together with a guide, you head out into the frozen landscape. You learn more about the ice, drill your own fishing hole and try to catch, for example, perch or pike. Fishing equipment, a warm overall and winter boots are included.
Day trip to the Jokkmokk Winter Market
From Luleå we take you to Jokkmokk in about 2 hours, straight across the Arctic Circle. You have the whole day to explore the market in your own time: stalls, Sámi handicrafts, local food, music and joik. At the end of the afternoon, the transfer takes you back to Luleå.
Staying in the centre of Luleå
During the trip you stay four nights in a double room at Clarion Hotel Sense, in the middle of Luleå, within walking distance of shops, cafés and restaurants.
When ice conditions allow, you can step almost straight from the hotel onto the frozen sea ice. You can borrow a traditional kicksled there for free, and in clear weather you also have a good chance of seeing the northern lights here.
Your stay includes a generous breakfast, and as a hotel guest you can use the gym and sauna for free.

One of the oldest markets in Sweden
The Jokkmokk Winter Market has been held since 1605 and has grown into one of the most important annual meeting places in Sápmi. What once began as a permanent trading place in the north of Sweden now attracts visitors from all over the world.
During the winter market, people gather for traditional Sámi handicrafts, art, food, music, joik, films, exhibitions and talks. Spread across the centre of Jokkmokk you'll find stalls, cultural activities and events that show different sides of Sápmi.
The market offers plenty of opportunity to taste local food and meet makers. Among other things, you'll find handmade products made of wood, textiles, silver and reindeer hides. Beforehand, we give you tips on how to recognise traditional Sámi handicrafts and how to buy consciously from Sámi makers.
For many Swedish Sámi, the market is not just an event for tourists. It is also a place to meet family and friends, exchange stories and sell handmade products. That combination of tradition, encounter and contemporary culture is what makes a visit to the winter market so special.
For 5 days and 4 nights, including accommodation, breakfast, the reindeer experience, the ice fishing tour and the day trip to Jokkmokk.

About the winter market
When is the Jokkmokk Winter Market 2027?
The Jokkmokk Winter Market takes place every year starting on the first Thursday of February. In 2027, the market is held from 4 to 6 February.
How old is the Jokkmokk Winter Market?
The first market was held in 1605. The Jokkmokk Winter Market has therefore existed for more than 420 years and is one of the oldest annually recurring markets in Sweden. In 2027, the 422nd edition takes place. The market originally began as a place for trade and meeting. Today, trade, Sámi culture, art, music, talks, food and winter activities come together there.
How many people visit the Jokkmokk Winter Market?
The market usually attracts tens of thousands of visitors. Recent information from the organisers mentions numbers of up to about 50,000 visitors, while Jokkmokk itself normally has only a few thousand inhabitants. The anniversary edition in 2005 was exceptionally busy and drew an estimated 80,000 visitors.
What is there to see and do at the winter market?
Spread across the centre of Jokkmokk you'll find market stalls, exhibitions, music, joik, talks, films and various cultural activities. You can look at traditional Sámi handicrafts, meet makers and taste local food. Winter activities are also offered around the market, such as dog sledding tours, snowmobile tours and reindeer activities. The offering differs from year to year, and some activities you have to reserve in advance.
Are there reindeer races every day?
Reindeer races on the frozen Lake Talvatis are traditionally among the most popular parts of the Jokkmokk Winter Market. At previous editions, the races took place on all three market days. The final programme for 2027 will be announced by the organisers later.
What local food can you try at the market?
During the market you can get to know local flavours from the north. Think of dishes with reindeer or elk meat, smoked products, fish, herbs and products made from northern berries such as cloudberries. Gahkku, a soft Sámi bread that is often eaten warm, is also worth trying.
What is Ájtte and is a visit included?
Ájtte is the Swedish Mountain and Sámi Museum in the centre of Jokkmokk. Its exhibitions give insight into the history, nature, Sámi cultures and traditions of Sápmi. A visit is recommended, but the entry is not included in our trip as standard. You can visit the museum in your own time on the market day.
Will you see traditional Sámi clothing at the market?
At the market you can see people wearing gákti: traditional Sámi clothing that is often recognisable by its colours, bands and carefully worked details. There is no single, general gákti. The design differs by area, family and tradition. It is personal clothing, not a costume worn only for tourists.
Practical information for this trip
Why do we stay in Luleå and not in Jokkmokk?
Jokkmokk has only limited accommodation capacity. Because of the popularity of the winter market, hotels and other accommodation in and around the village are often fully booked well in advance. During our trip you therefore sleep at Clarion Hotel Sense in the centre of Luleå. The return transfer between Luleå and the winter market is included in the package.
How do we travel from Luleå to Jokkmokk?
We take you by organised transfer. The drive takes about 2 hours each way, and along the way we cross the Arctic Circle.
How cold can it get during the Jokkmokk Winter Market?
In early February it can be very cold in Jokkmokk. Temperatures below −25 °C occur, and during cold spells the mercury can drop towards −40 °C. So wear several layers of clothing, preferably with wool or good thermal wear as a base. After you book, you receive a detailed PDF with clothing tips from us.
Do you want to join us to the Jokkmokk Winter Market?
There are a maximum of eight places available. Request the trip and we'll get in touch with you personally.
