What is Sápmi?

Sápmi is the homeland of the Sámi, stretching across the far north of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. It is a vast landscape of mountains, forests, tundra, and coastline, and the home of Europe’s only recognized Indigenous people.

Unlike “Lapland,” which is often used as a tourist term for the region, Sápmi is not defined by borders. It is defined by culture, language, and a deep connection to the land.

Where is Sápmi?

Sápmi covers the northern parts of four countries:

  • Norway

  • Sweden

  • Finland

  • Russia

It extends across the Arctic Circle, from the Atlantic coast to the inland tundra, with landscapes shaped by ice, wind, and the rhythm of the seasons.

Who are the Sámi?

The Sámi are reindeer herders, fishers, hunters, craftspeople, politicians, teachers, and artists. Their culture is as diverse as the landscapes they live in. Today, around 80,000–100,000 Sámi live in Sápmi, each with their own connection to the land.

Language plays a vital role in that connection. There are at least ten Sámi languages, with North Sámi being the most widely spoken, followed by Lule Sámi and Ume Sámi. Each language is tied to a specific area and way of life.

A few examples:

  • Boazu = reindeer (North Sámi)

  • Sápmi = the land and the people

  • Eaná = the land
